Evaluation of phase 2 of LPYL
Appendix B
Appendix B consists of a short information of who took part of the study tours to Sweden or South Africa and what areas they visited.
The goal of their own project, which they were working on or were given idea to is also mentioned. The Swedes had already before going to South Africa been expected to develop project proposals, which could be of interest to their South African colleagues. The result of these projects will be available at the project website, with some exception
The South African project ideas were formulated when visiting Sweden. Only a few reports have arrived by the time of closure of the project. The opinion of the Swedish participants on the implications of the study tour to South Africa has been taken from oral interviews during May and July 2002. The comments and the quotations concerning the travels of the South Africans are based on the travel reports I have read.
Beside a written report, the travellers to Sweden should - according to the Business Plan - report their experiences on the workshop that was taking place on the different project schools during the third and last visit to the school by the Project Manager.

Overall objective: Establish networking at al local level as a way to
accomplish library development goals
Maria on lessons learnt by LPYL:

library as a democratic institution. Working consciously with library plans has
been an important way of developing knowledge. The knowledge and engagement I
got through LPYL is concretised in my daily work."

the teaching process.

have also realised the importance of describing and marketing my own work and
learnt that small things too are important to enhance. And the power of true
enthusiasm! "

Visited Northern Province and Mpumalanga
Project: Library Plan for the municipality of Umeå

Project: Searching for information in the school library
A project at Vikingaskolan, Lund, grades 5 and 6
Goals:
Maud on lessons learnt by LPYL:
"The out-turned attitude of the school was impressing to me. The links
to business and community as well as the co-operation between parents and
teachers. The work to give the school library a place in school as well as the
work to formulate different goals and plans learnt me a lot."
Eva Petri
Children´s librarian
Visited Northern Province and Mpumalanga
Project: The making of a school library
Goal: The project is to be considered as a first step in a development
strategy in regard to working methods at the school. The main goal in this step
is to establish a school library. The project is based on the continued support
from the public library and aims at develop and find new ways of co-operation
between the school and the public library.
Eva on lessons learnt by LPYL:
"The participation of parents and the way schools tried to gather all
good forces for the best of the school library made an impression on me as well
as how visions and conscious planning can result in change. The trust in your
own capacity: 'This is what we want to do, Let's do it!' was an attitude that
impressed me."
Helene Swenne
School librarian
Visited North West Province and Gauteng
Project: Ljusdals Gymnasieskola – working in project
Project in the Upper Secondary School
Goal: The aim is to develop and educate a resource team that can prepare and
introduce a procedure for working in Project in the Upper Secondary School, to
the rest of the staff. An intermedial goal is to describe and observe how this
training will comprise the librarian’s role.
Helene on lessons learnt by LPYL:
"I always carry parts of the journey inside. It's always there.
Something I have thought of after the tour to South Africa is the forcing
necessity of not letting libraries become a 'private sphere' the way they
sometimes tend to do in Sweden. Libraries are invaluable sites for information
and campaigns of different kinds. I was impressed by the careful way of working
with campaigns, the striking pictures. Sometimes we use too much text in our
country."
Karin Westberg

Project: Library Democracy
A study at the Östra Funkabo School in Kalmar.

Malin Ögland

Project: Joy of reading depends on reading environment?
Finding out different ways how to make uneasy boys willing to read
Malin on lessons learnt by LPYL:
"The visit to South Africa made me aware of the resources I actually
have back home. About the personal responsibility for doing things. That it is
up to me to mediate my experiences. I also felt it was a good insight to realise
that we share so many problems and aspirations. And that we all make a
difference. That the world is not so big - and that you are not so tiny"
