Library Project for Young Learners ( LPYL)

Project description for the school library of Knutbyskolan,

Background

Knutbyskolan is situated in Rinkeby, a multicultural suburb of Stockholm. It has about 360 peoples of 6-12 years of age. My work is to build up a school library on a 3 year project basis. I am now at the beginning of the 2nd year.

The school has a profile of science, widely defined. There is a recently built and well equipped room for activities in this field that is used by of the whole school. There are also books bought and placed in that room.

Goal

The main goal is to make the library work in such a way that the school authorities will want to permanent it, even if no extra money is given to it. The idea of my project is to collaborate with the teachers involved in the direction of the science room to show a way to work with the library into the teaching process.

Subgoals for the library work

  • Incorporate the books of the science room in the computerized library catalogue.
  • If possible (and appropriate) buy these books for the library, so that the learners can borow them (the books of the science room are ment to be used there).
  • Make a listing of literature (fiction) of interest in this field that are available in the school library.

Subgoals for the establishment of collaboration with the teaching staff

  • Find a way to collaborate between the library and the science room in buying books that are of interest in this field.
  • Elaborate the collaboration together with the teachers.

Resources
To be kept within the project.

Time table
November 2000-April 2001 (for the sub goals).
